The Village Tree will be a place for a drink or bite to eat at any time of day

With food and music venue Corner Corner about to open its doors and the new Canada Water Leisure Centre set to welcome people to its facilities in the coming weeks, the area around Canada Dock is coming alive as a thriving leisure hub.

Later this year, two new dining spots will join the scene, run by local operators who know what makes this neighbourhood tick.

The first retail lettings in the development’s new spaces have been taken by Sushi Revolution and The Village Tree. Both will be operated by experienced restaurateurs with deep roots in the area.

Sushi Revolution

Setting up shop in Three Deal Porters near the entrance to the leisure centre, Sushi Revolution’s Canada Water restaurant will be looking to build on the success of its popular branches in Brixton and Shoreditch.

“I live here, so it’s about being part of my community,” says Aidan Bryan, who co-founded the brand with sushi chef Tom Blackshaw. “I’ve watched the whole place being built, so to be part of something bigger than us? It just makes sense.”

“For British Land to have the confidence in us and say ‘we really like what you do’, it means a lot to us. They’ve also made us feel really welcome, which makes it even more special.”

Sushi Revolution’s mantra is “good sushi at a good price, served by good people”, in a warm and informal atmosphere. Aidan says the team’s ultimate goal is for people to leave feeling like they’ve got real value for their money.

The menu features dishes including maki, sashimi, ebi dragon rolls, and a range of vegan options including fried Japanese aubergine. Drinks on offer include sake and cocktails.

All this will be served up in a venue fitted with plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors, with al fresco dining in the new Dock Office Gardens. Opening from midday to 10pm, the team setting out their stall as an accessible restaurant for the whole neighbourhood.

The Village Tree

All-day eatery The Village Tree, the brainchild of Australian chefs Tze-May Ng and Matt Lloyd, will open its doors seven days a week on the ground floor of Three Deal Porters along Deal Porters Way. The couple’s CVs feature signature restaurants The Fat Duck and The Ivy, but around these parts they’re known for running the much-loved Pear Tree in SE8 and The Barn at Surrey Docks Farm.

Canada Water is home to them too – “we can see The Founding from our kitchen window,” says Tze-May. “We want to create a place where you can get really good food, good drinks and where people can come together.”

A day-to-night offering will feature signature coffee from Caravan, sausage rolls with caramelised onions and nduja, toasties (from ham and cheese to seasonal hoisin duck) and healthy salad boxes. Sweet treats will include cherry and pistachio cakes, matcha brownies, a nod to the operators’ Aussie heritage with Lamington cakes.

Tze-May and Matt’s longstanding team are all locals too, and they’re excited to have a new place to explore. The pair are friends with Sushi Revolution’s Aidan, who lives next door to Pear Tree and has eaten there for more than a decade.

“We’ll work together to complement each other and people are excited to have us here, which makes us even more excited,” says Aidan. “It’s going to be really, really cool.”
