British Land is working with SGN to divert the gas main pipe located under Surrey Quays Shopping Centre car park. The gas main needs to be diverted to allow construction of the first phases of the Canada Water Masterplan, subject to planning permission for the Masterplan being granted.
Work will begin on Tuesday 28th May 2019, and will take place over a number of phases. The first phase of work is anticipated to run until early August, with all works anticipated to end in April 2020. Working hours will be 8am-6pm on Monday to Friday and as required, 9am-2pm on some Saturdays.
About SGN
SGN manage the network that distributes natural and green gas to 5.9 million homes and businesses across Scotland and the South of England. More information can be found here. Contractor JDT Utilities will be undertaking this work on SGN’s behalf.
Location of works
The image below shows the location of the existing gas pipe and where the diverted pipe will be located, as well as the areas where work will take place.
There will be no interruption to any gas supplies while the work is being carried out and we will do everything we can to minimise any disruption to the local community. There will be some noise while this work is undertaken, however we are mindful of those who live, work and shop in the area and have asked the contractor to try to minimise noisy activities wherever possible.
The first phase of works (marked in pink in the image above) will take place in the north west section of Surrey Quays Shopping Centre car park. A pedestrian route will be maintained and the entrance to the car park for vehicles will remain open. Two-way vehicular traffic will be maintained along Deal Porters Way, and there will be no disruption for those using buses or surrounding parts of the car park. Wherever road or footpath closures are required, signed diversions will be put in place for motorists and pedestrians. The Shopping Centre will remain open as usual with sufficient car parking retained at all times.
Keeping in touch
We will provide further updates on the works as they progress, including the location and impact of each further phase of work before it begins.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions or concerns in advance of or during the works please get in touch with the Canada Water Masterplan team. When appropriate, calls or queries will be diverted to SGN’s customer contact centre, where they are best placed to answer any questions.
