The Lion Dance welcomes in the Lunar New Year

Thanks to all who came out to welcome the Lunar New Year at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre on Sunday 26 January. Visitors to the celebration enjoyed traditional Chinese songs and dances (including of course the Lion Dance) and demonstrations of kung fu, tai chi and a tea ceremony. Stalls were run by Chinese food providers, charities and the local Buddhist temple.

Around 100 people attended throughout the day, including many families with young children who braved the inclement weather for the chance to try out activities such as calligraphy.

Southwark Mayor Cllr Naima Ali joined the festivities, staying for nearly two hours as she immersed herself in the activities. She gave a speech in which she emphasised the need for us all to learn about each other’s cultures and come together.

Kelin Chen, from event organisers Diamond Generation, said: “I wanted to thank British Land for the continued support for the community. Without the assistance, putting on such an event would be very difficult. A lot of the community-based businesses helped, along with the community [themselves], which made us feel proud to be a part of it.”

May the wisdom and power of the snake be with you in 2025!
