Canada Water is leading the way in sustainable large-scale regeneration projects in the UK. We’ve worked with expert partners to create a place that embraces wellness and nature, that’s climate-ready and inclusive, that’s diverse and filled with opportunity.
We have a strong track record of partnering with local groups, our supply chain and customers to make a positive difference to the lives of people in the area, to help people secure long-term, meaningful employment, to enhance the natural environment and to build sustainably.
To mark National Apprenticeship Week (10-16 February 2025), we take a look at how infrastructure consultants AECOM have been working to create pathways to employment for people on the Canada Water development.
Partners in positive impact
We’ve worked in partnership with AECOM at Canada Water for many years. As well as teaming up with us on project management and local communications, AECOM have enabled a host of education, training and employment opportunities to help people prepare for and enter the construction sector job market, while their people have contributed their time and expertise to local projects. Recent projects have included:
Recruiting more than 10 apprentices to work on the Canada Water development, giving people the opportunity to earn while they learn a trade
15 hours of targeted youth engagement to raise awareness of apprenticeships and run mock interviews, in collaboration with Ark Walworth Academy and Construction Youth Trust (pro bono)
100+ hours of Project Management expertise to Global Generation, helping to create the Paper Garden at Canada Water (pro bono)
Hiring two previously unemployed Southwark residents into full-time roles, paid at least the London Living Wage
An Apprentice at AECOM said: “Becoming an Apprentice at AECOM was one of the best decisions I made after completing my A-Levels. It has opened up immense opportunities, especially being able to work on the Canada Water Masterplan. This project has a special place in my heart, as I watched it evolve during my daily commutes to and from school. Now, being actively involved in its development is not only thrilling but also immensely satisfying.
“I have been working on the project for nine months, which has allowed me to further explore and understand the landscape of my local area, deepening my connection to the community and simultaneously enabling me to build on my industry knowledge. This blend of personal and professional development is truly enriching.”
We extend our heartfelt thanks to AECOM and all our other partners, who are working with us to create a positive, long-lasting social impact and contribute to a thriving new town centre.
