Marker Way Opens

Marker Way, a new footpath and cycle route on the Canada Water masterplan, is now open.

The new walkway creates another easy link between Lower Road and Canada Dock, and making it quicker to get to Southwark Park on foot or by bike.

The new cut-through also provides access to Dock Office Gardens and the new Canada Water Leisure Centre, as well as to the new bars and restaurants coming to the ground floor of Three Deal Porters and Dock Shed.  

The pathway is named in homage to ‘markers’, a group of workers who played a vital role in the history of the Surrey Commercial Docks. As timber and cargo arrived from around the world, they would mark up the packages according to a system known only to the initiated, to show who owned what, where the goods had come from and where they were going. In an era before automated tracking systems, they brought order to the hurly-burly of the dockside.

The new pedestrian and cycle route named after these vital workers is part of the plan to make Canada Water as easy as possible to navigate without the need for vehicles. We’re building 4.1km of new walkways and cycle paths across the development to help people get active, help reduce congestion on the roads and reduce reliance on cars. Many of these walkways will be green corridors, linking Canada Water’s green and blue spaces and doing double duty as biodiversity corridors.
