Transport Investment Supports Active Travel
Canada Water’s many open spaces – 130 acres to be precise – make it the perfect place for a springtime walk or bike ride, and many of the journeys people here make day-to-day can be undertaken without setting foot in a car.
Our vision for the Canada Water development recognises the wellbeing benefits of active travel. More journeys being made on foot or by pedal power means more people enjoying the physical and mental health benefits of exercise in the open air. It also means cleaner air for the people living and spending time here, reduces congestion on our roads, and eases pressure on our railway and bus networks.
With the new Canada Water Leisure Centre about to open its doors and the Decathlon store near the dock offering a huge range of affordable, good-quality equipment for sports and outdoor pursuits, this is a place that supports active lifestyles. The location, within walking distance of London Bridge and with many more destinations easy to cycle to across central London, is another big bonus for anyone looking to fit more physical activity into their daily life.
As part of a £33m investment in the area’s transport network, British Land is putting measures in place to promote active travel. We’re taking steps to build a neighbourhood where people don’t need to rely so much on motorised transport, and where getting from A to B is a pleasurable part of people’s lives.
Once complete, Canada Water’s active travel network will include:
- 4.1km of new walkways and cycle paths across the development area
- along with 10,000 bike spaces
- three Santander cycle hire stations
Since the start of 2024, we’ve already put in place more than 700m of new walkways and over 300 bike spaces to ensure the development is a practical place to visit on two wheels.
Pre-loved bikes and cycling equipment for all ages are also available from Cyclists Fighting Cancer’s shop in Surrey Quays Shopping Centre. Operating from a space opposite Superdrug provided by British Land, the charity takes donations of second-hand cycles, repairs and refreshes then sells them, using the proceeds to provide bikes to children living with or recovering from cancer.
